Let’s Educate Solutionaries

September 8, 2014

Given the pressing challenges of our time, from global warming, to the potential loss of half of all species on Earth by the end of this century, to the reality of 7+ billion people on this planet, each of whom needs access to clean water, adequate food, a home and economic opportunity (basics that 1 billion people currently lack), what should schooling be for?

How about this: let’s provide students with the knowledge, tools, and motivation to be conscientious choicemakers and engaged system thinkers for a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world. In other words, let’s educate a generation of solutionaries.

This TEDx editor's pick, The World Becomes What You Teach, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5HEV96dIuY, describes such a vision and ideas for putting it into practice in our schools.

As the president of the Institute for Humane Education, I welcome your thoughts about how this vision can work within your school and curriculum.
